ISP Book Store
Welcome to the ISP BookStore! Here you will find resources that are critical to starting and operating an Internet Service Provider.
The technical information you need for setting up routers, operating comm servers, installing servers, etc. are well documented in the books below. In addition, the business issues of accounting, marketing, and sales are covered by these recommended titles.

There are some very important books on Internet Infrastructure and managing Internet systems. Some of them are "MUST READS". I have listed the critical ones here. To order them just click on the title.

Apache : The Definitive Guide by Ben Laurie
This is the book published by O'Reilly on the Apache Web Server. The web server software on about half of the world's existing web sites is Apache--and this UNIX freeware continues to gain in popularity. O'Reilly & Assocites' new book "Apache: The Definitive Guide," written and reviewed by key members of the Apache Group, is the only complete guide on the market today that describes how to obtain, set up, and secure the Apache software. CD included!

ISP Survival Guide: Strategies for Running a Competitive ISP by Geoff Huston
When I started Rust.net there were no books on how to run an ISP. Just an Inet Access FAQ. Now look what you can get!

ISP Marketing Survival Guide: Proven Strategies and Secrets for Outmaneuvering the Competition by Christopher M. Knight
This is another great book for developing your ISP marketing strategy.

Linux Firwalls by Robert Ziegler
This book is being published in November. I will be reviewing it as soon as I can get my hands on a copy :-)

Managing Internet Information Services by Cricket Lieu, et. al.
This book is the standard for setting up a web server, mail server, and even gopher and WAIS servers. Many of us used it to get started way back in the early days of the Internet. Too bad it is out of print. Amazon says they can find an old copy if you want to try. It is written in the wonderful style of most O'Reilly publications. Very readable. This was the book I started with when I launched Rust.Net. I even own a copy autographed by Tim O'Reilly! :-)

DNS and Bind (4th Edition) by Paul Albitz and Cricket Lieu, et. al.
Domain Name Service (DNS) is how you translate all those names such as www.stiennon.com into an actual IP address. It is one of the simplest Internet services to implement and learn. But, you HAVE TO own this book.

Hacking Exposed:Network Security Secrets & Solutions, Third Edition by Stuart McClure, Joel Scambray, George Kurtz
This is the definitive book on hacking. If you are going to understand your vulnerabilities and how to defend your systems you need to understand the process used by hackers to find those vulnerabilities and exploit them.
